Scene of the bomb blast.
Boko Haram once again struck the ever busy abattoir market in Maiduguri, Borno State, waking residents with deafening explosions that left 50 dead yesterday morning.
The bomb which was concealed under a butcher’s table in the market went off, killing shoppers and travelers, a military source told Reuters news agency.
Other witnesses said a suicide bomber, who was shouting “Sai Buhari” and dancing in the abattoir, detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) strapped to his body when people gathered around him.
The extremist group has repeatedly attacked Maiduguri since the newly elected president designated the city as the new military command headquarters to curb the militants’ uprising.
The group, which President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to crush, has killed thousands of people and displaced around 1.5 million in its bid to establish an Islamic caliphate in the northeast.
Boko Haram appears to be returning to guerrilla tactics since losing territory gained in 2014 to offensives by Chadian, Nigerien and Nigerian troops over the past few months.
